You can't spend a summer in Utah without going to one of the many city day festivals. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, just about every city in Utah celebrates itself during the summer with a rodeo/fair/carnival.
This year we went to the Strawberry Day's festival in Pleasant Grove. It was a great choice because the "strawberry" part of the celebration was an ample supply of strawberries and cream. Delish!
We enjoyed walking around the carnival area and window shopping at all the booths. Brett was a great sport and looked at all the little boutiques with me. He even tried to win me a prize at the basketball game but he only tried once because we couldn't justify spending more than a dollar. Maybe some day.
Next up was the rodeo. I have always been a fan of rodeos (in the spectator, not participator, sense), which is odd because in our marriage I am the "city girl." Brett, on the other hand, never really went to rodeos prior to meeting me even though he grew up in a small town. Since being together, we've gone at least one every summer. We both enjoy them and they always provide good entertainment (both watching the events and people watching in the crowd). Although I may have been to more rodeos than Brett, he still is way more knowledgeable about them than I am. So please forgive me for a lack of correct terminology.
These little kids were doing their own competition and riding the sheep. Mutton busting, I think is what it was called. Those little kids sure were tough!
And if riding a sheep wasn't enough excitement, they then let a few cows loose with dollar bills taped on to them. The kids were invited into the arena to chase after the cows and grab the money. Again, tough kids. Those cows were large and some of the kids were fearless.
I've always thought horses were beautiful, so I enjoyed watching the mother and baby horses ride around the arena. Can't remember why they did it, probably just to show them off!
Of course they had the usual rodeo competitions as well, such as the calf roping pictured above. Most of the events started after it got dark, so I didn't get many pictures.
After the rodeo they had fireworks. I know I've mentioned I like a lot of things already in this blog but I LOVE fireworks! They were the perfect end to a great night!
