One of the perks of spending 10+ hours at work each day is having all of Friday off. This has been especially nice lately because Brett has had most of Friday off as well (he only has to work in the evenings). Unfortunately that'll change in a few weeks, but we took full advantage of our time together today. We went fishing!
The title of this post comes from a newish song that I really like by Trace Adkins. Its a cute song about a dad fishing with his daughter and makes me excited for when Brett can take our kiddo's fishing. Feel free to listen to the song as you read the rest of the post. (fyi: it won't play if you are reading this in Google Reader)
After a few failed fishing attempts last year, we didn't have high hopes of any success fishing in Utah. You may remember our 4th of July trip to the land of murky waters.
And then our 2nd attempt where all we caught was seaweed.
However, a few weeks ago we saw some people fishing down at Utah Lake and decided to try it out. Today was a nice day and so we packed a picnic and headed to the lake. We were disappointed to find out that we had to pay $8 just to get into the park so we scratched that plan rather quickly. Because Provo River runs into Utah lake, we walked along it for a while to see if we could find somewhere decent. No luck.
So we decided to head up the canyon and that is where we hit jackpot. It was my kind of fishing! Sunny weather, a railing to sit on, clear water, and lots of fish.
I caught the first one! Sure, it was small, but Brett was so proud of me and only a little disappointed that I caught one before him. (Sorry for the weird coloring of the picture, we took it on Brett's phone because I had left the camera at home. The rest were taken on my work phone which has a better camera. Did I mention I have a Droid for work? Sweet huh! Anyway, I digress.)
We didn't bring the right bait, something about there being different fish in the lake we were planning on going to than in the river we ended up at.... ?? Don't ask me. But, that didn't stop us. It wasn't long before Brett had caught himself a fish too.
Lucky for me, Brett has no qualms about touching the slimy icky fish. Not only is he in charge of baiting my hook, cleaning the mossy stuff of my hook and fixing my line if (read: when) I mess it up somehow.... he also gets the hooks out of the fish for us! What a stud.
We were just catching and releasing. I was worried we had killed one, but he was alive! Off he goes to get caught by someone else. (I promise the water wasn't this limey green color.)
I had lots of fun fishing (finally). It was really rewarding to actually catch some and seeing them in the water kept my interest. The spot we found wasn't for the hardcore fishers, but that is okay with me. There were lots of kids there with their parents and I fit right in.
We actually liked it so much that we are planning on going back up tomorrow after our ward activity. This time we'll take the right bait and Brett says we'll do even better! If we catch any really big ones I'll be sure to post the pictures. Wish us luck!
